A Fish Called Wanda (1988). In London, four very different people team up on a jewel heist, then try to double-cross one another for the loot, complicated by their efforts to fool a very proper barrister.

I was really expecting to love this one - particularly as a big Monty Python fan - but I don't know. It didn't really do all that much for me. I didn't mind the silliness or the hijinks, and Kevin Kline really is pretty funny in it, but to me it just felt like it kept changing its mind about what it wanted to be in a way that didn't charm me as much as it seems to have others. So yeah. Just not for me, I guess. 4/10.

The Innocent [L’Innocent] (2022)

Clémence has more improv skill in her left pinkie than your average UCB troupe member.  The aquarium worker starts out the film as a chaotic presence, disrupting Abel’s tank talk (the pronunciation of ‘axolotl’ is VERY important and VERY hard for little French kids) and making his early and extremely incompetent surveillance efforts that much more difficult.  Not that he isn’t doing a grand job of that himself.  Immediately suspicious of the ex-con his over-attached mother married while still in the big house, stick-in-the-mud Abel sets out tailing new stepfather Michel.  Very poorly.  Michel has a warmly indifferent attitude toward this, wryly commenting on the moped Abel’s car is about to hit while watching him through the window of a diner.  His associate in one last heist is less forgiving: get rid of the baggage or he’ll deal with it.  For Abel’s suspicions are correct: Michel is pulling a job rather than going totally clean.  But he’s a charismatic and charming presence nonetheless.  Salsa dancing with his wife in their new flower shop, training Abel and Clémence to improvise a scene compelling enough to keep the truck driver hauling the caviar they intend to steal glued to his truck stop seat rather than returning to his coach on his regular schedule, he’s a winning presence.  This is what cements the magic of The Innocent.  Crime capers need for us to root for the criminals, to want them to pull it off.  And this film pulls that off with ease through the creation of a gaggle of wonderful characters, melding comedy with weight.  The haggard, moody defensiveness of Abel.  The crazed look in Clémence’s eyes as she commandeers the heist van.  The genuine pain when Michel realizes his dream life is slipping away and Sylvie’s hurt at her betrayal.  It’s a simple, small story, and all the better for that.

Abel may be the worst improv scene partner in history.  Clémence has to absolutely carry them, bringing the trucker into this couple’s pain and then pivoting with all of Abel’s missteps to keep the ship on its course.  And when a double-cross threatens things?  Why not just grab a traffic cone and impersonate a horde of cops?  Absolutely the move.
